The Noble's Gambit

In which our protagonist is framed for treason, and the king's enemies make their move.

The frame-up came three days after the assassination attempt.

It was, in the language of Kenji's old job, a sophisticated attack. Not a denial-of-service, not a brute force. A logic bomb, hidden in the codebase, waiting to be triggered. The kind of bug that you do not see until it is too late.

The trigger was a letter.

The letter was found in Kenji's quarters, planted there by someone who had access to the palace. The letter was written in the style of the Whisper Cult, with the strange symbols, the grey ink, the wrong kind of light. The letter was addressed to "The Strange Sage of Oakhaven, who has been sent by the cult to corrupt the kingdom from within."

The letter was a forgery. Kenji had never written it. He had never seen it. But it was in his quarters, in his handwriting (a fair copy), in a place where only he and Elara had access.

Which meant, Elara said grimly, that one of the palace staff was in on it. Or that the king's own men were. Or that the king's own men were not as loyal as the king thought.

The arrest warrant came that afternoon. Kenji was summoned to the throne room, where Baron Vex's allies had gathered. They were not arrested. They had been released, on bail, on the grounds that the evidence against them was "unclear." The king's own judges had let them out. The king's own guards had escorted them out. The system was breaking.

The lead accuser was a man named Lord Harren, one of Vex's allies, who stood at the center of the throne room and read the letter aloud, in a voice that was full of righteous anger.

"Strange Sage. You have come to this kingdom under false pretenses. You claim to be a foreigner who wishes to help. But the evidence shows that you are a cult agent, sent to corrupt the very system you claim to debug. We demand that you be arrested, that your apprentice be arrested, that your captain be arrested, and that the three of you be tried for treason."

The throne room was silent. The king, who was sitting on the throne, looked at Kenji. The look was not hostile. It was the look of a person who is watching his own system collapse and is not sure what to do.

Kenji stood. He did not panic. He did not raise his voice. He said, calmly: "I have a request."

"Speak," Lord Harren said.

"I would like to cast a spell. The spell will read the mana signature of this letter. The spell will tell us who wrote it, when it was written, and where the ink came from. The spell cannot lie. The spell cannot be fooled. I will cast the spell in front of the entire court, and the court will see the truth."

Lord Harren's face went pale. "That is not how trials are conducted."

"That is how audits are conducted. And this is an audit. The letter is a data point. The data point has a provenance. The provenance is the truth."

The throne room was very quiet. The king, who had been watching, stood up.

"Let him cast the spell," the king said. "The throne defers to evidence."

Kenji walked to the center of the throne room. He held out his hand. He whispered: "Function create(name='audit', inputs={target=letter, scope=provenance}, outputs={writer_identity, creation_time, ink_source}, cost=low, stability=very_high)!"

The spell shimmered. The letter rose into the air, slowly, and a small point of light appeared at the corner, tracking the mana signature of the ink. The light moved. It traced the lines of the letter. It clustered at the signature, at the "Strange Sage" at the bottom, at the place where the writer had paused.

And then, with a clarity that was visible to everyone in the room, the light showed the truth.

The letter had been written by Lord Harren's own scribe. The ink had been purchased from a shop in the lower city that supplied the cult. The mana signature was a match for Lord Harren's own household mage.

The throne room was silent for a long moment.

Then the king said: "Lord Harren. You are under arrest for treason, forgery, and conspiracy with the Whisper Cult. Take him away."

The king's guards moved. Lord Harren tried to run. He did not get far. He was taken out of the throne room, screaming, and the throne room was quiet again.

The king sat down. He looked at Kenji. He said: "You have just saved my throne."

"I have just debugged the kingdom, Your Majesty. The throne was the runtime. The runtime was crashing. We have fixed the immediate bug. There will be more."

"I know. There will be more. That is what being king is."

He paused. He looked at the throne room, at the nobles who were left, at the guards who were not arrested, at the system that was still broken in ways they did not yet understand.

"I have an offer to make you," the king said. "But it will have to wait for the trial. We have a traitor to prosecute, and I want you to be the one to prosecute him."

## Status
- Frame-up: dismantled with audit spell
- Lord Harren: arrested for treason
- Cult connection: confirmed (ink from cult supplier)
- The king: has an offer for Kenji, after the trial
- Vex's network: shrinking but not gone

## Lessons
- A logic bomb in the codebase is a forged letter
- The truth has a mana signature. The signature cannot lie.
- A king who defers to evidence is a king worth saving.
- A throne room is a runtime. Runtimes crash. We fix them.
