Arrival at Oakhaven

In which our protagonist encounters bureaucracy, suspicion, and one very competent guard captain.

Oakhaven was a town of about three thousand people, built around a central market square, with stone walls, thatched roofs, and a town clock that had stopped working sometime before Kenji was born. It was the largest settlement Kenji had seen in this world, and he approached it with the wary optimism of a city person who has spent too long in the wilderness.

The town guard met the caravan at the gate. There were six of them, well-equipped, professional-looking, and led by a woman in her mid-thirties with short dark hair, a longsword at her hip, and the kind of expression that made you immediately check your pockets.

"Halt. Caravan master, state your business."

Orven bowed, slightly. "Master Orven, independent trader. Bringing salt, cloth, and minor luxuries from the southern markets. Requesting permission to enter and trade."

"Granted. You have three days. After that, the autumn market opens and we'll need the space." The guard captain's eyes swept the caravan, and landed on Kenji. "Who is this?"

"A new hire. Foreign. Strange. Useful."

"Strange how?"

"He makes light from nothing, and he made the ground swallow a bandit two days ago."

The guard captain's eyebrows rose. She looked at Kenji, looked at the small glowing dragonfly orbiting his head, and said: "Step forward, stranger."

Kenji stepped forward. The guard captain looked him up and down. She was a head shorter than him, but her presence made up for it. She had the air of someone who had spent her entire adult life in charge of other people, and was very good at it.

"Name."

"Kenji."

"Origin?"

"Very foreign."

"Useful answer."

"Accurate one."

The guard captain's mouth twitched, just slightly. "I am Captain Elara Vance, commander of the Oakhaven town guard. If you intend to stay in this town, you will register with the town hall, declare your business, and abide by our laws. We do not tolerate troublemakers, con artists, or unlicensed mages."

"I'm a licensed mage?"

"You tell me. Are you a mage?"

Kenji thought about it. "I'm a software engineer who happens to be able to cast spells. I don't know if that counts as a mage."

"It counts as a mage."

"Then yes."

Captain Elara nodded, made a note in a small book, and said: "You have three days. After that, you report to me, and we will discuss your situation. Do not cause trouble in the meantime."

"I don't intend to."

"Good. Intention is not guarantee. The cells are not comfortable."

She turned and walked away, barking orders at her guards. Orven, watching her go, said softly: "That is the woman who runs this town. The mayor is for show. She is the one with the real power."

"I noticed."

"She does not like strangers."

"I noticed that too."

"You will need to make an impression. A good one. She is not easy to impress."

Kenji, looking at the retreating back of Captain Elara Vance, thought: "Challenge accepted."

But he also noticed other things. He noticed the way the guards deferred to her without being told. He noticed the way her eyes had lingered on Pip, just a moment, with an expression that was not suspicion exactly, but close. He noticed the small book she carried, and the way she wrote in it constantly, and the way the other guards glanced at it like it was a weapon.

He also noticed the way the gate guards had changed shift exactly when the caravan arrived. Whoever had organized the watch had known the caravan was coming. He filed that under "probably normal" and walked into the town.

Oakhaven smelled like bread and woodsmoke. The market square was busy even at this hour, with merchants setting up stalls, children running between legs, and a handful of performers in the corner juggling something that was not quite apples. The town clock stood at the north end of the square, a tall stone tower with a beautiful blue-and-gold face and a mechanism that, Kenji could hear even from here, was not turning.

He stopped in the middle of the square and stared at it. The Compiler pulsed.

[Observation: mechanical system, water-powered, status=offline]
[Reason: regulatory mechanism failure, no maintenance for 24+ months]
[Estimated repair complexity: medium. Estimated mana cost: low to medium. Estimated time: 2-4 hours with proper tools.]

"Oh," Kenji said softly. "I can fix that."

He did not know it yet, but that quiet "I can fix that" was the moment Oakhaven started to like him. The town did not like strangers. But the town did like people who could fix things.

He walked toward the guild hall, with Pip orbiting his head and a town of three thousand strangers watching him, and thought: "Okay. New plan. Get a room. Get a meal. Fix the clock. Don't get arrested."

It was, he realized, exactly the same plan he had followed at every new job.

The difference was that this job was in a different world, the boss carried a sword, and the HR department was much more muscular.
