In which our protagonist is haunted by Malachar's voice, and the team pulls him back from the edge.

The haunting began on the third night of the recompiling.

Kenji was sleeping in the command tent, with the rewrite pulsing around him, with the team resting, with the doubt held but not gone. He dreamed.

In the dream, he was in the World Root, alone, with the source code around him, with the void in the distance. The void was no longer just the absence of code. The void had a voice. The voice was Malachar.

"You cannot do this," the voice said. "You cannot rewrite the world. You cannot debug the grief. You cannot save the love. The love does not save. I know. I tried. I lost my daughter. I lost my wife. I lost the world. You will lose your family. You will lose your team. You will lose yourself. The rewrite will fail. The new world will be as broken as the old world. The debugging will not work. The through-line is a lie. The love is not the answer. The grief wins. The grief always wins. Give up. Stop the rewrite. Go home. Be with your family. Save the love you have, instead of spending it on a world that cannot be saved."

The voice was persuasive. The voice was tired, and old, and very, very human. The voice was the voice of a father who had lost his daughter and had spent a thousand years trying to unmake the world because he could not make the world good enough to save her.

Kenji felt the doubt rise. The through-line that had been his spine, his constant, his answer to everything, began to fade. The love that had been the answer began to feel like a lie. The team began to feel like a dream.

Then, in the dream, he heard another voice. Not Malachar. Pip.

"You are not alone," Pip said. "You are not alone. You have a team. You have a family. You have a love. The through-line is true. The love is the answer. The grief does not win. The grief is held. The debugging works. You do not give up. You do not stop the rewrite. You do not go home. You finish the work. You finish the debugging. You finish the love. You finish the world."

The voice was faint. The voice was the kernel of the new world, the watcher, the guardian, the fragment of the original source code. The voice was the love that Malachar had had, and lost, and that Kenji had kept.

Kenji woke up. The dream was over. The team was around him. The rewrite was pulsing. The doubt was still there, but the love was stronger.

The voice had tried to convince him. The voice had almost succeeded. But the team had pulled him back. The love had pulled him back. The debugging had pulled him back.

He looked at Elara, who was watching him, who had seen the doubt on his face, who had held his hand while he slept. He looked at Lian, who had the through-line in her notebook, who had been holding the logic. He looked at Seraphina, who had given up her empire, who had been holding the abundance. He looked at Calla, who had lost her home, who had been holding the unity.

"Thank you," he said.

"We did not do anything," Elara said. "You did it yourself."

"No. I did not do it myself. I did it with you. The team held me. The love held me. The debugging held me. The through-line held me. I would have given up. I would have stopped. I would have gone home. But you were here. The team was here. The love was here. That is what saved me. That is what the rewrite is. The rewrite is not me. The rewrite is the team. The rewrite is the love. The rewrite is the debugging, done together, by people who have decided to hold each other up."

The room was quiet.

"We have to finish this," he said. "We have to finish the rewrite. We have to deploy the new world. We have to debug the doubt. We have to do it together. The haunting will come again. The voice will try again. The grief will try again. But we will hold each other. We will hold the love. We will hold the world."

The team nodded. The rewrite pulsed. The doubt was held. The debugging continued.

The haunting would come again. The team would hold again. The love would win again. The debugging would work.

The through-line was true. The love was the answer. The team was the difference.
