The Five Pillars
In which our protagonist's team defines the five pillars, and the structure of the new world becomes clear.
The five pillars were defined on a Sunday, because Sundays were Kenji's, and this was the most important definition of his life.
He sat in the command tent, with the team around him, with the rewrite pulsing, with the doubt held but not gone. He opened his notebook. He wrote the definitions.
"The five pillars are the structure of the new world," he said. "Each pillar is held by one of us. Each pillar is a piece of the new world. Each pillar is a piece of the debugging. Each pillar is a piece of the love."
"Elara holds the Memory pillar. The memory of everyone the world has lost. The memory of Maren. The memory of King Haldor. The memory of the seven-year-old girl. The memory of Pip. The memory of every guard, every refugee, every person who has been deleted by the void. The memory is the foundation. The memory is the point. The new world will not forget."
He wrote it in the notebook. The words were clear.
"Lian holds the Logic pillar. The logic of the code, the logic of the debugging, the logic of the through-line, the logic of the structured magic. The logic is the spine. The logic is the debugger. The logic is the way the new world thinks, the way it debugs itself, the way it holds the through-line. The new world will think."
He wrote it in the notebook. The words were clear.
"Seraphina holds the Abundance pillar. The abundance of the trade, the abundance of the resources, the abundance of the wealth that was the Silver Road, the abundance of the things the world needs. The abundance is the body. The abundance is the substance. The abundance is the way the new world provides, the way it feeds itself, the way it gives. The new world will provide."
He wrote it in the notebook. The words were clear.
"Calla holds the Unity pillar. The unity of the kingdoms, the unity of the people, the unity of the team, the unity of the love. The unity is the connection. The unity is the web. The unity is the way the new world holds together, the way it connects, the way it remembers that the home is not the place but the people. The new world will connect."
He wrote it in the notebook. The words were clear.
"Pip and I hold the Love pillar. The love that does not save. The love that is still worth giving. The love that is the answer to the through-line's incompleteness. The love that Malachar had, and lost, and corrupted, and that Kenji kept, and that the team held, and that the new world will know. The love is the heart. The love is the answer. The love is the only thing that has ever held the world together."
He wrote it in the notebook. The words were clear.
"Five pillars. Five people. Five pieces of the new world. Five pieces of the debugging. Five pieces of the love."
He closed the notebook. He looked at the team.
"We are the structure of the new world. We are the debugging. We are the love. The rewrite is not a spell. The rewrite is not a piece of code. The rewrite is us. The rewrite is the team. The rewrite is the love, held together, given to the new world."
The team nodded. The definitions were clear. The structure was in place.
The next step was the testing. Each pillar had to be tested. Each pillar had to be proven. Each pillar had to give everything it had to the new world, the way Seraphina had given her empire, the way Calla had given her home, the way Elara had given her past, the way Lian had given her body, the way Kenji and Pip had given their love.
The testing was coming. The pillars would be tested. The structure would hold or it would break.
The rewrite was not over. The debugging was not over. The love was not over.
The new world was waiting.
