Elara's Stand

In which the Memory pillar holds the memory of the world, and relives every loss to make the new world strong enough to hold them.

The Memory pillar was tested first.

Elara stood at the center of the World Root, with the memory of the world flowing into her, with the memory of everyone the world had lost, with the memory of Maren, and King Haldor, and the seven-year-old girl, and Pip, and every guard, every refugee, every person the void had taken.

The memory was heavy. The memory was the kind of heavy that breaks people, the kind of heavy that makes the debugging impossible, the kind of heavy that the love has to hold.

Elara held it.

She held the memory of her mother, who had died when she was twelve, who had taught her the stars, who had taught her the pattern, who had taught her that the threads of a tapestry are like the lines of a spell.

She held the memory of the seven-year-old girl, who had counted the stars, who had said "papa, the stars are like the code, all connected, all holding each other up," who had been Malachar's daughter, who had died of a sickness that no code could cure.

She held the memory of Maren, who had stayed behind to help, who had died in the void, who had believed in the through-line until the through-line could not save her.

She held the memory of King Haldor, who had stayed behind to hold the line, who had died in the void, who had been Calla's father, who had been old and tired and had not left.

She held the memory of Pip, who had given everything, who had been the kernel of the new world, who had been a dragonfly and a friend and a love, who had bonded with Kenji in a forest three years ago.

She held the memory of every guard who had died defending a wall, every refugee who had been lost in a flood, every person who had been deleted by the void, every name that had been written in her notebook over seven years of defending Oakhaven.

The memory was heavy. The memory was breaking her. She was shaking, and crying, and the tears were not tears but mana, the structured magic of the memory, the kind of mana that holds a world together.

She did not break.

She held the memory. She held it the way the wall holds the soldiers, the way the firewall holds the corruption, the way the team holds the debugging. She held it because the memory was the point, because the memory was the foundation, because the memory was the thing that the new world needed to know who it was.

She cast the spell. The memory flowed into the World Root. The new world began to remember.
