The Northern Envoy
In which Princess Calla arrives, says what she has been thinking, and Kenji is surprised by how little.
Calla arrived on a Tuesday, in a small carriage, with a small retinue. She did not bring an army. She did not bring a parade. She brought herself, her lady-in-waiting, and a single piece of luggage.
She came straight to the palace. She did not wait for a formal audience. She walked into Kenji's office, where he was reviewing the Council of Kings' agenda with Elara and Lian, and she said: "I need to speak with you. Alone."
Elara and Lian looked at each other. They looked at Kenji. They had known this was coming. They had been preparing for it, in the way that a system prepares for an expected event, by making sure the rest of the system was stable.
"We will be in the next room," Elara said. She stood up. She kissed Kenji on the cheek, in front of Calla, deliberately, and walked out. Lian followed, closing the door behind her.
The office was quiet. Calla sat down across from Kenji. She was wearing traveling clothes, simple, practical. She looked tired. She looked determined.
"I have been thinking," she said.
"About what?"
"About you. About me. About the alliance. About what happens next."
She paused. She looked at him with those sharp eyes, the eyes that had been watching him for two seasons now, the eyes that had seen the dams, the ice caps, the corruption wave, the redirect.
"I am going to inherit my father's throne," she said. "I am going to rule the northern kingdom. I am going to do it as part of the alliance. I am going to do it with you."
"With me."
"As my husband."
The word hung in the air. Kenji did not say anything. He had known this was coming. He had not known how to feel about it. He had been thinking about it, too, in the late hours, in the chair, with Pip's faint spark in the back of his mind.
"Calla," he said, slowly. "I am not a king. I am a software engineer. I am a debugger. I am a man who has Sundays off and likes to read books in chairs. I am not a match for a princess."
"You are a match for anything," Calla said. "You are the man who debugged a kingdom. You are the man who built a continental alliance. You are the man who saved the world from a wave of corruption. You are also a man who takes Sundays off and likes to read books in chairs. Both of those are true. Both of those are why I want to marry you."
"It is not that simple. There is Elara."
"I know. There is also Lian, and there is Seraphina. I have watched the four of you for two seasons. I have seen the way you look at each other. I have seen the way Elara defers to you, and the way you defer to Elara. I have seen the way Lian works beside you, and the way Seraphina funds the work. I have seen what you have. It is not a conventional relationship. It is a team. It is an alliance. It is a debugging partnership."
She paused. She leaned forward.
"I want to be part of it. I want to be part of the team. I want to be part of the alliance. I want to be part of the debugging partnership. I want to be part of the thing you are building. I am not asking to replace anyone. I am asking to join."
Kenji looked at her. He thought about Elara, who had kissed him on the cheek, deliberately, in front of Calla, as if to say: "I see her. I see you. We are going to talk about this." He thought about Lian, who had walked out without a word, but whose eyes had said: "We will figure this out." He thought about Seraphina, who was somewhere in the south, running the Silver Road, but who would have something to say about this.
He thought about the through-line. He thought about "any sufficiently well-defined problem is solvable." This was, in a way, a problem. A relationship problem. A team problem. A debugging problem.
"What does your father say?" he asked.
"My father is old. He has given me authority. He has, in his letters, expressed the hope that I will marry well and produce an heir. He does not know that I want to marry a software engineer from another world who has a faint dragonfly in the back of his mind. He will be surprised. He will adjust."
"What does the alliance say?"
"The alliance says that the northern kingdom needs a strong connection to the central kingdom. The alliance says that the connection should be personal, not just political. The alliance says that the strongest connection is marriage."
"So this is a political marriage."
"It is a political marriage. It is also a personal marriage. I am not proposing for politics alone. I am proposing because I have watched you for two seasons, and I have decided that you are the person I want to stand beside when the world ends. I am proposing because when I am with you, I feel like the world is debuggable. I am proposing because I love you."
She said it simply. She said it without drama. She said it the way a person says a thing that is true.
Kenji looked at her for a long moment. Then he said: "I need to talk to the others. Elara, Lian, Seraphina. I cannot make this decision alone. The team makes decisions together."
"Talk to them. I will wait. I have waited two seasons. I can wait a few more days."
She stood up. She walked out. The office was quiet.
Kenji sat in his chair. He put his head in his hands. Pip's faint spark pulsed, in the back of his mind, the pulse feeling like: "Well. That just happened."
Kenji sent back: "Yeah. That just happened."
