The Corruption Spreads
In which our protagonist discovers that the corruption is now in the land itself, and the source code target is revealed.
Lian found it first.
She was reading the source code, the way she had learned to do, the way that was becoming more natural to her every day. She was looking at the clean parts, the parts that she had been working with for three seasons, the parts that she knew were stable. She was looking for bugs, the way a debugger always looks for bugs, the way that the through-line demanded.
She found the target.
It was buried deep in the world's source code, in a part that was not clean, in a part that was tangled and chaotic and broken. It was a piece of the original architecture, a piece that Malachar had been searching for, a piece that was the key to whatever he had been planning for a thousand years.
It was the World Root.
The World Root was the place where the world's source code was generated. It was the compiler. It was the program that ran the program. It was the meta-code, the code that wrote the code, the foundation of everything. Malachar had written it, a long time ago, when he was still human, when he still believed that he could build a world that would last forever.
Then he had fallen. The World Root had corrupted. The corruption had been spreading for a thousand years, slowly, invisibly, working its way through the world's mana, through the climate, through the land, through everything.
Lian came to Kenji on a Tuesday morning, with a notebook in her hand, and said: "I have found the bug. The real bug. The bug that is the source of all the other bugs."
"The World Root," Kenji said.
"Yes. How did you know?"
"I have been suspecting it for a long time. The pattern of the corruption, the way it has been spreading, the way it has been following the mana flow, the way it has been generating storms and floods and earthquakes. It is not random. It is a search pattern. Malachar has been searching for the World Root. He has been trying to find it. He has been trying to corrupt it. He has almost succeeded."
"The corruption has reached the World Root. It is in the land. It is in the soil. It is in the stone. It is in the water. The corruption is not in the air anymore. The corruption is in the ground. We are standing on it."
Kenji looked out the window. The city was normal. The people were going about their day. The climate was stable. The alliance was working. Everything was fine.
Everything was not fine. The corruption was in the ground beneath their feet, spreading slowly, working its way toward the World Root, corrupting the foundation of everything.
"How long do we have?" he asked.
"Weeks. Maybe a month. The corruption is accelerating. The more it spreads, the faster it spreads. It is a positive feedback loop. We have to stop it before it reaches the World Root, or the world ends."
"What happens if it reaches the World Root?"
"The World Root generates the world's source code. If the corruption reaches the World Root, the source code will be corrupted. The world will not end in a bang. The world will end in a corruption. The world will continue to run, but the bugs will be permanent. The chaos will be permanent. Malachar will win."
The room was quiet.
"We need to debug the World Root," Kenji said.
"We need to debug the World Root," Lian agreed.
"Before the corruption reaches it."
"Before the corruption reaches it."
"Can you do it?"
Lian looked at him. She was twenty years old. She had been his apprentice for three seasons. She had learned to read the source code. She had designed the cult detection spell. She had taught structured magic to seven kingdoms.
"I can do it," she said. "But I cannot do it alone. I need the team. I need the alliance. I need the world."
"You have all of it," Kenji said. "What do you need?"
"I need Elara to hold the line in the south. The corruption is coming from the south. We need to stop it at the source."
"Elara is already there. Calla is with her. The line is held."
"I need Seraphina to redirect the trade routes. The World Root is deep in the earth. We need supplies, mana, food, all of it, flowing into the south, all the time, until the debugging is done."
"Seraphina is already on it. The Silver Road is the backbone."
"I need the Council of Kings to keep the alliance stable. The debugging will take weeks. The alliance cannot crack."
"The Council is stable. Theodore is steady. The kings are committed."
"I need you," she said. "I need you to be the senior partner. I need you to be the architect. I need you to debug the system while I debug the World Root."
"You have me," Kenji said. "You have always had me."
She nodded. She took a breath. She opened her notebook. She started writing.
The plan was made. The debugging was about to begin. The World Root was waiting. The corruption was coming. The world was at stake.
Pip's faint spark pulsed, in the back of Kenji's mind, the pulse feeling like: "This is it. This is the moment. The debugging of the world is about to begin."
Kenji sent back: "Yeah. This is it."
