The Alliance

In which our protagonist's seven kingdoms become one, and the through-line is restated at the largest possible scale.

The alliance was formalized on a Sunday, because Sundays were Kenji's and he had decided that this was important enough to use one.

The seven kings and queens gathered in the great hall of the central kingdom's palace. They had all been there before, for the Council of Kings, for the alliance, for the war. They had all signed the original charter. They had all worked the crystal network. They had all debugged the world.

Today, they were going to do something different. Today, they were going to formalize what they had been doing all along.

Kenji stood at the head of the great hall. He was wearing his Sunday clothes, which were not different from his other clothes, because Kenji did not have Sunday clothes. He had Pip's faint spark in the back of his mind. He had Elara on his right, in her Captain-Commander uniform, the king's father's sword at her hip. He had Lian on his left, in her academy robes, the structured magic curriculum under her arm. He had Seraphina in the front row, in her merchant's clothes, the Silver Road ledger in her hand. He had Calla at the end of the row, in the traveling clothes she had arrived in, the small luggage she had unpacked.

He had his team. He had his alliance. He had his world.

"We are here," he said, "to formalize the alliance. The alliance has been working for two seasons. It has held against storms, floods, cults, proxy wars. It has held because the kings and queens in this room have decided to debug the world together. Today, we make that decision permanent. Today, we sign the charter of the United Kingdoms."

The room was quiet.

"The United Kingdoms will be governed by the Council of Kings, with the senior partner rotating every five years. The senior partner today is King Theodore. The senior partner in five years will be, I think, Princess Calla, when she inherits her father's throne. The United Kingdoms will share the crystal network, the climate thermostat, the continental water regulation, the structured magic curriculum, the merchant intelligence, the military coordination. The United Kingdoms will be a single system, running on a single architecture, with a single debugging partnership at the heart."

He looked at the kings and queens. They were all looking at him with the same expression: the expression of people who have been waiting for someone to say this.

"The United Kingdoms will be a debugging alliance. We do not fight wars. We debug wars. We do not solve problems. We debug problems. We do not rule. We debug. And we have discovered, over the last two seasons, that any sufficiently well-defined problem is solvable. The problems we have faced, the storms, the floods, the cults, the proxy wars, have all been sufficiently well-defined. We have solved them. We have debugged them. We have done it together."

He paused. He looked at the team. He looked at the alliance. He looked at the world.

"The United Kingdoms will face bigger problems. The corruption is still out there. The void is still forming. Malachar is still searching. The next phase of the debugging will be the biggest deployment of our lives. It will be the deployment of a lifetime. It will be the deployment of many lifetimes. We do not know if we will succeed. We know that we will try. We know that the through-line is true. We know that the debugging is the work. We know that the work is the love. And we know that the love is the only thing that has ever held the world together."

He held out his hand. The charter was on the table, in front of him, written in seven languages, on paper made from seven kinds of trees, with seven signatures already at the bottom. The signatures of the seven kings and queens. The signatures of the United Kingdoms.

"Sign," he said. "Make it real."

The kings and queens signed. One by one. The room was quiet except for the scratch of quills on paper. When the last signature was made, the room erupted in applause. The alliance was formalized. The United Kingdoms were born.

Kenji stood in the middle of the room, with Pip's faint spark in the back of his mind, with Elara and Lian and Seraphina and Calla, with the kings and queens of the seven kingdoms, with the applause ringing in his ears.

He thought: "We did it. We debugged the world. We made it work. The United Kingdoms are real. The debugging is the work. The work is the love. The love is the only thing that has ever held the world together."

The applause continued. The day went on. The alliance was real.

But the void was still out there. The corruption was still spreading. Malachar was still searching.

The next chapter was about to begin.
