The Void Appears
In which the season ends, and the next one begins.
The void appeared on a Wednesday.
It started in the south, in the place where the corruption was strongest, in the valley where the Battle of Three Armies had been fought. The ground simply disappeared. Not collapsed. Not exploded. Disappeared. The soil, the stone, the water, the air, all of it was replaced by a nothing, a void, an absence that was visible as a faint shimmer in the air.
The void was not a place. The void was an absence of place. It was where the source code had been deleted. It was where the world's code had been overwritten with nothing. It was a hole in reality, and it was growing.
By Thursday, the void was ten kilometers wide. By Friday, it was a hundred. By Sunday, it had reached the southern coast, and the ocean was pouring into it, and the void was drinking the ocean, and the ocean was disappearing, and the world was being deleted, byte by byte, in a void that had no bottom and no edges and no end.
The crystal network was going crazy. The reports from the south were terrifying. The void was not stopping. The void was accelerating. The debugging was not working. The redirects were failing. The firewalls were breaking. The climate thermostat was struggling.
Kenji was in the capital, in the audience chamber, with the king and the Council of Kings, watching the reports come in, watching the void grow on the map, watching the world be deleted in real time.
"The corruption has reached the World Root," Lian said. She was in the south, at the edge of the void, with Elara and Calla, trying to read the source code, trying to find a way to stop it. Her voice was shaking. "The void is not the corruption. The void is the absence of code. The corruption has overwritten the source code with nothing. The world is being deleted. We have to rewrite the World Root before the void consumes everything."
"How long do we have?" the king asked.
"Days. Maybe a week. The void is moving toward the capital. When it gets here, the city will be deleted. The alliance will be deleted. The debugging will be deleted. Everything will be nothing."
The room was silent.
"We need to rewrite the World Root," Kenji said. "We need to write a new source code. We need to debug the foundation of reality."
"Can we do that?" King Theodore asked.
"Any sufficiently well-defined problem is solvable."
"Theodore was looking at him. "The room was looking at him."
"The world is being deleted," Kenji said. "That is a sufficiently well-defined problem. We define the new source code. We deploy it to the World Root. We overwrite the corruption. We save the world. We have done harder things."
"The room was quiet."
"We need a team," Kenji said. "We need the team that debugged the climate. We need the team that built the alliance. We need the team that held the line. We need the team that has been with me since the clock tower. We need Elara, Lian, Seraphina, Calla. We need the four of them. We need Pip. We need the debugging partnership."
"The room was silent."
"We are going to rewrite the source code of the world," Kenji said. "We are going to do it together. We are going to do it because that is what we do. We are going to do it because the through-line is true. We are going to do it because the love is the only thing that has ever held the world together. We are going to do it because the work is the love and the love is the work."
He paused. He looked at the map. He looked at the void, growing on the edge of the southern coast.
"I need to go south," he said. "I need to be with the team. I need to be at the World Root. I need to debug the foundation."
"Then go," King Theodore said. "Take whatever you need. Take the army. Take the mages. Take the kings. Take whatever you need to debug the world."
"Thank you, Your Majesty."
"Thank you, Kenji. For everything. For the clock. For the aquifer. For the firewall. For the audit. For the alliance. For the through-line. For the debugging. For being the kind of man who takes Sundays off and debugs the world anyway."
Kenji smiled. He had not smiled in a long time. He walked out of the audience chamber. He walked to the stables. He saddled a horse. He rode south.
The void was waiting. The team was waiting. The world was waiting.
The debugging was about to begin.
End of Season 5
Kenji has gone from royal advisor to leader of the United Kingdoms. He has completed the harem, won the Battle of Three Armies, formalized the alliance, and discovered the World Root. The void has appeared. The world is being deleted. The rewriting is about to begin.
The team is complete. Elara, Lian, Seraphina, Calla. The debugging partnership is now a family. The family is going to debug the world.
Pip is a faint spark. The corruption is everywhere. The void is growing.
Next season: "Memory Leak." Personal loss, dark revelations, Kenji's breakdown, the intervention, the ancient library, the truth about Malachar, the impossible choice.
