The Confession
In which our protagonist's team says what they have been feeling, and the alliance gets personal.
The confession happened on a Sunday, because Kenji had Sundays off and would not do it on a working day.
It was a small gathering. Just the five of them, in the room Kenji had claimed as his office, with the chair the king had given him, and the books he liked to read, and Pip's faint spark in the back of his mind. Elara was there, in her Captain-Commander uniform, the king's father's sword at her hip. Lian was there, in her academy robes, the structured magic curriculum under her arm. Seraphina was there, in merchant's clothes, the Silver Road ledger in her hand. Calla was there, in traveling clothes, the small luggage she had arrived with still unpacked.
Kenji stood in the middle of the room. He was nervous. He had not been nervous in a long time. He had faced storms, floods, cults, and gods. He was nervous about this.
"I have been thinking," he said. "About what we are. About what we are becoming. About the fact that we are about to formalize something that has been informal for a long time. And I realized that I have not said something that I should have said. To each of you. Separately. And also, maybe, together."
The room was quiet.
"So I am going to say it. To each of you. In front of the others. Because the team is not a secret. The team is the alliance. The alliance is the work. The work is the love. They are all the same thing."
He looked at Elara.
"Elara. I love you. I have loved you since the walls, since the midnight walks, since the moment you told me you were afraid and asked me to walk with you anyway. You are the senior partner. You are the wall. You are the reason I have a home in this world. I want to spend the rest of my life debugging the world with you."
Elara did not cry. She nodded. She said: "I love you too. I have loved you since the clock tower, since the firewall, since the moment you made a system that held against the cult. I want to spend the rest of my life defending the walls with you."
He looked at Lian.
"Lian. I love you. I have loved you since the contract, since the first spell test, since the moment you showed up at the drilling site in a clean apprentice's robe and decided that what I knew was worth leaving the academy for. You are the architect. You are the documentation. You are the reason the systems work. I want to spend the rest of my life writing code with you."
Lian did not cry either. She smiled. She said: "I love you too. I have loved you since the iron mines, since the firewall, since the moment you let me fail at the last step and showed me that failure is iteration. I want to spend the rest of my life teaching the world with you."
He looked at Seraphina.
"Seraphina. I love you. I have loved you since the trade route, since the spy network, since the moment you drove a caravan alone through the corruption zone because the expedition needed supplies. You are the investor. You are the backbone. You are the reason the systems are funded. I want to spend the rest of my life investing in the world with you."
Seraphina laughed. It was her merchant's laugh, the one that said "I am delighted and I am going to make money off this." She said: "I love you too. I have loved you since the audit, since the crystal network, since the moment you built a system that was used in ways you did not design and got excited about it instead of angry. I want to spend the rest of my life making deals with you."
He looked at Calla.
"Calla. I love you. I have loved you since the dams, since the ice caps, since the moment you decided that a software engineer from another world was worth a kingdom. You are the princess. You are the north. You are the reason the alliance has a future. I want to spend the rest of my life ruling alongside you."
Calla's eyes were very bright. She said: "I love you too. I have loved you since the Council of Kings, since the corruption wave, since the moment you told a room full of kings that the debugging was about to begin and meant it. I want to spend the rest of my life being on the team with you."
The room was quiet. Pip's faint spark pulsed, very softly, the pulse feeling like: "This. This is what the system was for."
Kenji sent back: "Yeah. This is what the system was for."
Then Kenji said: "So. We are doing this. The four of you. Me. Sundays off. Books in chairs. Long conversations on walls at midnight. Structured magic curriculum. Trade routes. Kingdoms. The whole thing. We are doing this."
"We are doing this," Elara said.
"We are doing this," Lian said.
"We are doing this," Seraphina said.
"We are doing this," Calla said.
The Sunday ended. The confession was made. The team was complete.
The debugging partnership had become a family.
