In which our protagonist designs the new Source Code, and the team prepares for the most dangerous journey of their lives.

The plan had three parts.

Part one: gather the three artifacts. The First Crystal, in the southern ruins, where the world's code was first written. The Second Crystal, in the northern wastes, where the code was first corrupted. The Third Crystal, in the central kingdom, where the code was first loved.

Part two: bring the artifacts to the World Root. The World Root was in the south, at the edge of the void, in the place where the world's code was generated. The journey to the World Root was dangerous. The corruption was everywhere. The void was approaching. The cult was still active, still trying to stop the rewrite.

Part three: cast the rewrite. The five pillars, each one holding a piece of the new code, would surround the World Root. The artifacts would be placed at the cardinal points. The rewrite spell would be cast, the new source code would be written, the old corrupted code would be overwritten. The world would be debugged, refactored, refactored into a world that could hold its own loss.

Kenji designed the rewrite. He sat in the ancient library, with the books and the scrolls and the crystals glowing around him, with Pip's faint spark in the back of his mind, and he wrote the new source code.

It was the most difficult code he had ever written. It was not just a function or a spell. It was a whole new architecture, a new foundation, a new world. The code had to be beautiful, had to be elegant, had to be the kind of code that a person would write if they had all the time in the world and all the love in the world and none of the bugs.

He wrote it in the language of structured magic, in the language of the Compiler, in the language that Malachar had written a thousand years ago and that Kenji had been using for two years. The code was full of comments, full of explanations, full of the small kindnesses that a programmer leaves for the next person who has to read the code.

But the comments were different. The comments were not technical notes. The comments were letters. The comments were letters from Kenji to the world, written into the source code, hidden in the foundation, where the world would read them every time it ran.

For Maren, who stayed behind.
For the refugees, who lost their homes.
For Malachar, who lost his daughter.
For Elara, who loved the stars.
For the love that does not save but is still worth giving.

The team prepared. Elara trained the guards. Lian tested the rewrite spell. Seraphina funded the journey. Calla mobilized the northern army. The alliance was mobilized. The crystal network was set up. The world was watching.

The plan was ready. The artifacts were waiting. The rewrite was coming.

Pip's faint spark pulsed, in the back of Kenji's mind, very softly, the pulse feeling like: "This is it. The final phase. The debugging is about to enter its deepest level. The rewrite is about to begin. We are going to do what Malachar could not. We are going to do it together. We are going to do it with love."

Kenji sent back: "Yeah. We are going to do it together. We are going to do it with love. The through-line is true. The love is the answer. The team is the difference. The debugging is the work. The work is the love. The love is the only thing that has ever held the world together."

The team left the ancient library on a cold morning, with the crystal network lit up, with the alliance watching, with the world waiting.

The gathering was about to begin.
