Seraphina's Sacrifice
In which our protagonist's investor gives up everything she has built, and discovers that the love is worth more than the wealth.
Seraphina called a meeting of the Silver Road's board of directors on the morning after the Third Crystal was gathered.
The board was in the south, at the trading house that had been the headquarters of her merchant empire for fifteen years. The board was twelve people, the most powerful merchants in the seven kingdoms, the people who had built the Silver Road with her, the people who had funded the alliance, the people who had funded the debugging.
Seraphina stood at the head of the table. She was wearing merchant's clothes, simple, practical, the kind of clothes she had worn when she had first arrived in Oakhaven with a failing caravan and a desperate hope.
"I am dissolving the Silver Road," she said.
The room was silent.
"The rewrite is coming. The rewrite needs everything. The rewrite needs the wealth, the resources, the supply chains, the trade routes, the entire merchant network that I have built over fifteen years. The rewrite is not a battle. The rewrite is not a war. The rewrite is a deployment. And a deployment needs to be funded."
"You cannot dissolve the Silver Road," one of the directors said. "The Silver Road is the backbone of the alliance's economy. Without the Silver Road, the kingdoms cannot trade. Without the Silver Road, the refugees cannot be fed. Without the Silver Road, the debugging cannot continue."
"The debugging is about to end. The debugging is about to become the rewrite. The rewrite is the last phase. After the rewrite, the world will be different. The world will not need a merchant empire. The world will need a new beginning."
"A new beginning that you are funding with everything you have built."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Seraphina looked at the director. She looked at the room. She looked at the people who had been her partners, her rivals, her friends, the people who had built the Silver Road with her.
"Because Kenji taught me something," she said. "He taught me that the love is worth more than the wealth. He taught me that the debugging is worth more than the profit. He taught me that the team is worth more than the empire. He taught me that the through-line is true, that any sufficiently well-defined problem is solvable, but that the problem of grief is not solvable, and the problem of loss is not solvable, and the problem of the love that does not save is not solvable, and the only thing that is solvable is the world, the world that can hold the grief, the world that can hold the loss, the world that can hold the love that does not save but is still worth giving."
She paused. She looked at the table. She looked at the contract she had brought, the contract that dissolved the Silver Road, the contract that gave everything to the rewrite.
"I am signing this contract. I am giving everything I have to the rewrite. I am not asking you to follow me. I am asking you to let me go. I am asking you to take what I have built and to use it, in the new world, in the world that comes after the rewrite, in the world that Kenji and Elara and Lian and Calla are going to build. Use it well. Use it with love. Use it with the knowledge that the wealth is not the point. The love is the point."
She signed the contract. She put the quill down.
The room was silent for a long time. Then, one by one, the directors stood up. They did not sign the dissolution. They signed a different document. A document that said: "We, the directors of the Silver Road, hereby transfer all assets, all resources, all supply chains, all trade routes, all wealth, to the Rewrite Fund, to be used by the Strange Sage and his team in the deployment of the new world."
Seraphina cried. She had not cried in fifteen years. She had not cried since she had been a young merchant with a failing caravan, since she had arrived in Oakhaven with a desperate hope, since she had met a strange foreigner who had fixed her trade routes and changed her life.
She cried because the love was worth more than the wealth. She cried because the team was worth more than the empire. She cried because the through-line was true, and the love was the answer, and the rewrite was the work, and the work was the love, and the love was the only thing that had ever held the world together.
The Silver Road was dissolved. The wealth was transferred. The rewrite was fully funded.
Pip's faint spark pulsed, in the back of Kenji's mind, very softly, the pulse feeling like: "She gave up everything. She gave up the empire. She gave up the wealth. She gave up the thing she had built, the thing she had spent her life building, the thing that had been her purpose. She gave it up for the rewrite. She gave it up for the team. She gave it up for the love."
Kenji sent back: "Yeah. She gave it up for the love. That is what the rewrite is. The rewrite is the team giving up everything for the love. The rewrite is the debugging that is also a sacrifice. The rewrite is the through-line, completed by the love, funded by the sacrifice, deployed by the team."
