The Gathering
In which our protagonist's team begins the most dangerous journey of their lives, and discovers that the artifacts are guarded by the things Malachar loved most.
The gathering began on a cold morning, with the team leaving the ancient library and heading north, toward the First Crystal, in the central kingdom, where the code was first loved.
The First Crystal was the easiest of the three. It was in the central kingdom, in a place that the alliance controlled, in a temple that had been built a thousand years ago to honor the world's original code. The cult had tried to take it, but the alliance had held it. The crystal was safe. The crystal was waiting.
Kenji and Elara went to get it.
The journey was three days. The corruption was everywhere, but not strong. The void was in the south, not the center. The crystal network kept them in touch with the team, with Lian and Seraphina and Calla, who were preparing for the other two artifacts.
The temple was a beautiful ruin. It had been built in a time before the kingdoms, in the time of Malachar, in the time when the code was first written and the world was first loved. The walls were covered with the structured magic of the Compiler, with the kind of code that Kenji used every day, with the kind of code that Lian had learned to read.
Inside the temple, in the center, on a pedestal of white stone, was the First Crystal. It was the size of a fist, glowing with a soft blue light, humming with the kind of mana that Pip had once had, when Pip was a dragonfly, when Pip was a familiar, when Pip was a friend.
Kenji picked it up. It was warm. It was humming. It was the code that Malachar had written first, the code that had been his first attempt, the code that had been his first love.
And then, in the back of his mind, Pip's faint spark screamed.
Not an alarm. A recognition. The crystal was not just an artifact. The crystal was a piece of Malachar's love, a piece of his daughter, a piece of the grief that had corrupted the world. The crystal was beautiful, and the crystal was dangerous, and the crystal wanted to be left alone.
"Function examine!" Kenji whispered. "Target: crystal. Scope: full!"
The crystal was more than a crystal. The crystal was a memory. A memory of a seven-year-old girl, sitting in a garden, counting the stars, saying "papa, the stars are like the code, all connected, all holding each other up." The memory was preserved in the crystal, perfectly, forever, in the way that memories are preserved when they are too important to lose.
Kenji held the memory. He held the seven-year-old girl. He held the stars. He held the love that had built the world and the grief that had broken it.
He wanted to put the crystal down. He wanted to leave it in the temple. He wanted to let the memory rest, the way memories should rest, the way that Malachar's memory of his daughter should have rested.
But the rewrite needed the crystal. The rewrite needed the love. The rewrite needed the memory of what the world was supposed to be, before the corruption, before the grief, before the bugs.
He put the crystal in his pack. He picked it up. He carried it.
The memory of the seven-year-old girl, counting the stars, was with him now. It was a weight. It was a gift. It was both.
He rode back to the camp. He gave the crystal to Lian, who placed it in the artifact case, which was a special case that Lian had designed, with mana preservation and corruption protection and all the things that a debugger would design for the most important artifacts in the world.
The First Crystal was secure. The first artifact was gathered. The journey was half-done.
Pip's faint spark pulsed, very softly, the pulse feeling like: "The memory of the daughter is with us now. We carry her with us. We carry the love and the grief together. The rewrite needs both."
Kenji sent back: "Yeah. We carry her with us. We carry the love and the grief together. The rewrite needs both."
