In which our protagonist learns why the woman he loves fights so hard, and discovers that the world is full of Elaras.

The team stopped in a small village on the way south, to rest, to resupply, to prepare for the final journey to the Third Crystal.

Elara was sitting outside the inn, looking at the stars. She did this often. She had been looking at the stars since she was a little girl, since her mother had taught her the names of the constellations, since her father had told her that the stars were like the code, all connected, all holding each other up.

Kenji sat down beside her. He did not say anything. He just sat.

"My mother told me the stars were like the code," she said, after a while. "She was a weaver. She used to say that the threads of a tapestry were like the lines of a spell, and that the pattern was like the world, and that if you pulled one thread, the whole pattern would change. She taught me to see the pattern. She taught me to see the connections."

"Where is she now?"

"She died when I was twelve. Sickness. The kind of sickness that no healer could cure. The kind of sickness that comes from nowhere and takes everything."

"I am sorry."

"It was a long time ago. I have made peace with it. Mostly." She paused. "When I joined the guard, I thought I was protecting the town. I was. But I was also protecting the pattern. I was also protecting the connections. I was also doing what my mother taught me: pulling the threads, seeing the pattern, making sure that the pattern held."

"That is why you are the Memory pillar. You hold the memory. You hold the pattern. You hold the connections."

"Yes. And I hold the memory of my mother. I hold the memory of Maren. I hold the memory of every person the world has lost. I hold the memory of the seven-year-old girl who counted the stars. I hold the memory of the love that does not save but is still worth giving."

She looked at him. Her eyes were very bright, in the starlight.

"Malachar lost his daughter. He lost his wife. He lost the world he had built. He went mad. I lost my mother. I lost six guards. I lost the people I was supposed to protect. I did not go mad. I do not know why. I think it is because I had the guard. I think it is because I had the team. I think it is because I had the pattern, the threads, the connections, the people who pulled me back when I was about to fall."

"That is the difference. That is what you have that he did not have. You have a team. You have a family. You have people who pull you back when you are about to fall."

"Yes. And that is what the new world needs to be. A world where the pattern holds. A world where the connections are strong. A world where the love is not just the love of a parent for a child, but the love of a team, of a family, of a group of people who have decided to hold each other up, the way the stars hold each other up, the way the code holds the world together."

He took her hand. He held it. He thought about the through-line, about "any sufficiently well-defined problem is solvable," about the fact that the problem of grief was not solvable, but the problem of how to live in a world with grief was solvable, and the answer was the team, the answer was the family, the answer was the love that did not save but was still worth giving.

"Elara," he said. "When the rewrite happens, when you hold the Memory pillar, you are going to give the memory to the new world. You are going to give the pattern, the connections, the threads, the memory of everyone the world has lost. The new world will have that memory. The new world will know the names of the people we have lost. The new world will not forget."

"I know. That is why I am the Memory pillar. The memory is the point."

"The memory is the point. The love is the answer. The team is the difference. The through-line is the spine. And the rewrite is the work."

She kissed him. It was a quiet kiss, in the starlight, in the small village, on the way to the Third Crystal, on the way to the rewrite. It was the kind of kiss that said: "I love you. I trust you. We are going to do this together. We are going to debug the world together. We are going to hold the memory together. We are going to hold the love together. We are going to hold the world together."

The kiss ended. The stars shone. The night went on.

Pip's faint spark pulsed, very softly, in the back of Kenji's mind, the pulse feeling like: "The memory of the daughter is with us. The memory of Elara's mother is with us. The memory of Maren is with us. The memory of everyone the world has lost is with us. The rewrite needs all of them. The new world will hold all of them."

Kenji sent back: "Yeah. The rewrite needs all of them. The new world will hold all of them. The memory is the point. The love is the answer. The team is the difference. The debugging is the work."
