The Second Artifact
In which our protagonist's apprentice almost dies retrieving the Third Crystal, and the team learns what sacrifice really means.
The Third Crystal was in the southern ruins, in the place where the world's code was first written, in the place where Malachar had built the world, in the place where the void was now.
The void was eating the ruins. The ruins were being deleted, slowly, the stone and the soil and the air being replaced by the nothing, by the absence of code. The crystal was in the heart of the ruins, in the place where Malachar had first written the world's source code, in the place where the world had begun.
Lian went to get it. She took a small guard, the best mages in the alliance, and Pip's faint spark, which was the only thing that could navigate the void.
The journey was three days into the void. The void was not a place. The void was the absence of place. The void was where the source code had been deleted. The void was the bug that could not be debugged, the bug that was not a bug but the absence of code.
Lian did not sleep. She did not eat. She read the source code, the way she had learned to do, the way that was becoming more natural to her every day. She read the void the way you read a piece of code that has been deleted. She read the absence the way you read a variable that has not been initialized.
The crystal was there, in the heart of the ruins, on a pedestal of white stone, glowing with a soft white light. The white light was the color of the world's beginning, the color of the code that had been written first, the color of the love that had been the foundation of everything.
Lian reached for the crystal. Her hand touched the pedestal. The void reacted.
The void was not just an absence. The void was a defense. The void was the last line of Malachar's corruption, the thing that would not let the rewrite happen, the thing that would keep the world broken, the thing that would keep the grief running forever.
The void tried to delete her.
The green light flared. The corruption surged. The deletion spell began, the spell that would remove her from the source code, the spell that would unmake her, the spell that would make her another memory in the world's broken code.
Pip screamed. The faint spark flared, bright, the brightest it had been since the sacrifice at the climate thermostat. The spark threw itself between Lian and the void, and the spark absorbed the deletion spell, the way it had absorbed the corruption virus, the way it had always been willing to absorb the things that would hurt the people it loved.
Lian grabbed the crystal. She ran. She did not look back. She ran through the void, through the absence, through the broken code, with the crystal in her hand and Pip's faint spark in her shoulder, the spark dimming, the spark almost gone, the spark that had given everything again.
She made it out of the void. She collapsed at the edge, where the team was waiting, where Kenji and Elara and Seraphina and Calla were waiting. She held up the crystal. She said: "I got it. I got the Third Crystal. Pip saved me."
Pip was barely a light. A faint, almost invisible speck on Lian's shoulder. The spark had given everything, again, and this time, the cost was almost too much.
"Pip," Kenji said. He held the spark in his hands. He did not cry. He was not the kind of person who cried. But his hands were shaking, and his heart was breaking, and the dragonfly he had bonded with in a forest three years ago was almost gone.
Pip pulsed, very weakly, the pulse feeling like: "I did what I was made to do. I am the firewall. I am the last line of defense. I am the fragment of the original source code. I am the love that was not corrupted. I am tired. I am so tired. But I am still here. I am still watching. I am still the small bright spark in the back of your mind."
Kenji sent back: "Thank you. Thank you for everything. Rest now. We will carry the world for you. We will carry the debugging for you. We will carry the love for you. We will do the rewrite. We will finish what you started. We will hold the love and the grief together. We will hold the memory and the logic and the abundance and the unity and the love. We will hold the world together. Rest now. We will carry you."
The spark dimmed, but did not go out. It was still there, in the back of Kenji's mind, faint but present, the watcher, the guardian, the fragment of the original source code.
The Third Crystal was secure. The third artifact was gathered. The journey was done.
The rewrite was ready to begin.
