Calla's Kingdom
In which our protagonist's princess loses her home, and discovers that the home is not the place but the people.
The void reached the northern kingdom on a Wednesday.
Calla was in the south, with the team, with the artifacts, with the rewrite. The northern kingdom was being defended by her father, King Haldor, who was old, who was tired, who had given his daughter authority to act on his behalf, who had stayed behind to hold the line.
The void came fast. Faster than the forecasts had predicted. Faster than the redirects could handle. The void was not just eating the world. The void was angry. The void was Malachar's last line of defense, the thing that would not let the rewrite happen, the thing that would keep the world broken.
The crystal network lit up with the news. The northern kingdom was falling. The cities were being deleted. The people were fleeing. The army was fighting, but the army could not fight the void. The army could not fight the absence of code.
Calla took the news standing up. She did not fall. She did not cry. She stood, and she held the crystal that was broadcasting the news, and she watched her home be deleted.
"My father," she said.
"He is evacuating," the crystal said. "He is the last to leave. He is holding the line."
"He will not leave. He is old. He is tired. He has held the line for too long. He will not leave. He will stay. He will die in the void."
"Calla..."
"He will stay. He will die. He will become a memory, like Maren, like the seven-year-old girl, like everyone the world has lost. He will become a memory in the new world. He will be held by the Memory pillar. He will be remembered."
She put the crystal down. She stood in the command tent, with the team, with the artifacts, with the rewrite. She did not break. She did not fall. She stood.
"I am the Unity pillar," she said. "Unity is not just about the kingdoms. Unity is about the people. Unity is about holding the people together, even when the people are lost, even when the people are deleted, even when the people are gone. Unity is about remembering that the home is not the place but the people."
She looked at the team. She looked at Kenji. She looked at Elara, who had lost her mother. She looked at Lian, who had almost died. She looked at Seraphina, who had given up her empire.
"The home is the people," she said. "The home is the team. The home is the love. The northern kingdom is gone. My father is gone. My home is gone. But the home is not the place. The home is the people. The home is the team. The home is the love. And the love is still here. And the team is still here. And the rewrite is still here. And we are going to do the rewrite. We are going to save the world. We are going to make a new world, a world that can hold the loss, a world that can hold the grief, a world that can hold the memory of everyone the world has lost, including my father, including the seven-year-old girl, including Maren, including everyone."
She took a breath. She stood straight.
"I am the Unity pillar. I am going to give the unity of the kingdoms to the new world. I am going to give the unity of the people. I am going to give the unity of the love. I am going to give everything I have, the way Seraphina gave everything she had, the way Elara gives everything she has, the way Lian gives everything she has, the way Kenji and Pip give everything they have. We are the team. We are the family. We are the debugging partnership. We are going to debug the world."
The room was quiet. The void was eating the northern kingdom. The home was gone. The father was gone. The Unity pillar was still standing.
Pip's faint spark pulsed, in the back of Kenji's mind, very softly, the pulse feeling like: "She lost her home. She lost her father. She did not break. She is the Unity pillar. She is the one who holds the people together. She is the one who reminds us that the home is not the place but the people."
Kenji sent back: "Yeah. She is. The home is not the place. The home is the people. The home is the team. The home is the love. And the love is still here. And we are going to do the rewrite."
