Malachar's Redemption
In which the chaos god becomes an ally, and chooses to sleep forever.
The redemption happened on a Sunday, because Sundays were Kenji's, and this was the most important redemption of his life.
Malachar sat in his chair, in the inner sanctum, in the place where the code was generated, in the place where the love had begun. His eyes were open now. His face was calm. He was at rest. He was ready.
"I have been a chaos god for a thousand years," he said. "I have been the bug. I have been the corruption. I have been the void. I have been the storm. I have been the flood. I have been all of it. I have hurt the world. I have hurt the people. I have hurt my daughter, in a way, by corrupting the world she was supposed to live in."
He paused. He looked at the team.
"But I have also been a father. I have also been a man. I have also been a person who loved his daughter, who lost his daughter, who went mad with the loss. I have also been a debugger, a programmer, a person who believed that any sufficiently well-defined problem is solvable. I have also been a person who was wrong, and who knew he was wrong, and who went mad with the wrongness."
He looked at Kenji.
"You have debugged me. You have held my grief. You have been with me. You have given me the rest I have been looking for, for a thousand years. You have given me the redemption I did not know I was looking for. You have given me the chance to be a father again, in a way, in the memory, in the forest, in the place where the love began."
He stood up. He walked to the center of the inner sanctum. He stood at the place where the new world was being written, the place where the rewrite was being deployed, the place where the debugging was being completed.
"I am going to sleep," he said. "Forever. I am going to sleep in the World Root, in the place where the code was generated, in the place where the love began. I am going to sleep, and I am going to dream of my daughter, and I am going to be with her, in the dream, in the way that fathers are with their daughters, in the way that the love is with the love."
"I am going to give you the original source code. I am going to give you the code I wrote, a thousand years ago, the code that was the foundation of the world, the code that was beautiful and broken and grief-written. I am going to give it to you, and you are going to use it, in the new world, in the way that the new world needs it. The code will be the foundation. The code will be the memory. The code will be the love."
He cast a spell. The spell was the most beautiful spell Kenji had ever seen, the most elegant, the most carefully designed, the most full of the love. The spell was Malachar's gift, Malachar's apology, Malachar's redemption. The spell was the original source code, flowing from the original programmer to the new debugger, from the father to the team, from the chaos god to the love.
The original source code flowed into the new world. The foundation of the new world was now the original code, debugged, healed, held, loved. The new world was not just a rewrite. The new world was the original, the way it was supposed to be, the way Malachar had wanted it to be, the way the love had always meant it to be.
Malachar smiled. It was a real smile, the kind that reached his eyes, the kind that made the room feel like it was worth living in.
"I am going to sleep now," he said. "I am going to rest. I am going to dream. I am going to be with my daughter. Thank you, Kenji. Thank you, team. Thank you, world. Thank you, debugging. Thank you, love. The love is the answer. The debugging is the work. The work is the love. The love is the only thing that has ever held the world together."
He walked to the World Root. He lay down in the place where the code was generated. He closed his eyes. He smiled. He slept.
The chaos god was at rest. The original programmer was at peace. The father was with his daughter, in the dream, in the way that fathers are with their daughters.
The redemption was complete.
